Summary:
The Peer education officer will work as a member of the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Dissemination team to research, develop, pilot and roll out new youth programs involving peer education and service learning opportunities focused on international humanitarian law and humanitarian values. The IHL Dissemination Unit currently works with IHL education delivered to youth through networks of educators and instructors; this new position will take IHL education beyond the classroom setting to engage young people directly through peer education and service learning initiatives, empowering them to explore the importance of IHL and to relate humanitarian principles and values to contemporary issues and current affairs. The Peer education Officer will roll out these programs and service learning initiatives to Chapters and educational institutions across the country and will also work in close cooperation with Red Cross Clubs in chapters and schools.

Basic knowledge of international humanitarian law, the Geneva Conventions and the work of the American Red Cross required and a strong interest in international issues, human rights and international relations or related fields are essential. A particular interest in and enthusiasm for engaging with young people and for reaching out to youth outside of traditional classroom settings are also critical to this position.

Responsibilities:
· Develop, pilot and test new programs on IHL targeted to youth directly;
· Conduct research on best practices for youth-focused programs and initiatives in the areas of peer education and service learning;
· Initiate, maintain and develop contacts with Chapter focal points or youth coordinators, relevant educational institutions and with the IHL team’s existing networks of educators;
· Foster NHQ partnerships with peer education/service learning programs and organizations;
· Develop a youth network and work with existing Red Cross youth bodies or organizations;
· Train American Red Cross Staff and volunteers to implement and roll out peer education and service learning programs;
· Work with existing IHL staff in developing youth strategy, including role of peer education and Red Cross Clubs;
· Manage day-to-day budget of peer education initiatives, ensure well-organized, consistent recordkeeping and track relevant information for reporting purposes.
Qualifications:
· Minimum Bachelors degree in education, political science, international studies, communications or related field required;
· Basic knowledge of IHL, the Geneva Conventions and the American Red Cross required;
· Minimum of 3 years of related work experience;
· Familiarity with the Red Cross and chapter network an important asset;
· Must have strong drafting, verbal communications and networking and social skills;
· Proven experience effectively developing and managing relationships with networks, partners, chapters and other stakeholders;
· Strong organizational skills to lead the development of new youth programming; ability to manage competing deadlines and priorities;
· Familiarity with social media tools as a way to communicate effectively on IHL and related issues to students, young people and partners.
· Creativity, enthusiasm and demonstrable interest in working with youth communities, activities and opportunities.
