Epidemiologist (specialist in Surgery)

Epicentre is a non-profit organization, created in 1987 by Médecins Sans Frontières (“MSF”), whose activities include research, field epidemiology and training. Under the strategic supervision of Epicentre’s Director of Epidemiology and Population Health (based in Paris) and the administrative oversight of the OCP Deputy Medical Director based in NY, the epidemiologist will be responsible for the development and management of research projects on surgical programs, most frequently conducted with MSF. S/he will also participate in Epicentre’s activities and interventions related to field epidemiology and training, and assist MSF’s field staff in the monitoring of health programs.

Position responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the field, medical and operations departments, identify relevant research issues, review the literature on the subject, and translate them into research questions
  • Establish and follow an annual research agenda in collaboration with Epicentre’s staff, and the medical and operational departments of MSF
  • Develop and write research protocols
  • Organise and conduct studies in the field
  • Clean, organise and analyse data sets
  • Write study reports
  • Communicate results through presentations at scientific conferences and in publication in the scientific literature
  • Participate in meetings of experts at the international level
  • Develop and maintain a network of relevant partners
  • Teach and participate in MSF training courses in epidemiology and public health as a lecturer in the areas of expertise of the candidate. These sessions are in Europe and in the field depending on needs of field teams and headquarters staff.

Qualifications:

  • Medical Doctor preferably with a degree in epidemiology.
  • At least 3-5 years experience in surgical interventions in resource limited contexts and/or experience in applied epidemiology focusing on surgical interventions.
  • At least 3 years experience in developing countries is preferred.
  • Relevant working experience with MSF and/or another NGO would be an advantage.
  • Experience in conducting training modules.
  • Fluent in French and English.
  • Good communication skills, both in speech and writing.
  • Willing to travel 3 to 4 months a year, sometimes at short notice.
  • Ability to write reports, medical protocols, and scientific articles for internal and external audiences
  • Ability and experience making effective public presentations and speeches to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience in developing countries is preferred.
  • Residence in or willingness to relocate to NYC metro area.

Terms and Conditions

Starting salary is $102,065 and we provide a comprehensive benefits package.
