University of Birmingham - The Examinations and Congregations Office

The Examinations and Congregations Office at the University of Birmingham is seeking to recruit Supporting Invigilators to assist in the invigilation of exams during the University's centrally-managed examination periods for the 2011-12 academic year.

We are recruiting invigilators primarily for the University's main summer examination period (April-June 2012), but you may also be asked to work during the University's supplementary examination period (August-September 2012). You will need to be available for at least ten working days during the main summer examination period, which runs from 30 April 2012 to 1 June 2012, excluding Sundays and UK public holidays. The supplementary examination period runs from 20 August to 31 August 2012, excluding weekends and UK public holidays.

This role is open to non-students and postgraduate research students only. Undergraduate students and students on postgraduate taught programmes may not apply for this role.

Main Duties

You will assist the Senior Invigilator to ensure the smooth running of the University's examinations. Your main duties will include:

  • Working as part of a team to prepare the examination venue in order to ensure that the exam starts promptly. This will include laying out examination attendance slips, answer books, question papers, and any other necessary materials on exam desks.
  • Working as part of a team to invigilate the exam, which will include dealing with any examination incidents or irregularities that may arise. This will also include accompanying students to the toilet, and handing out any additional examination materials that are needed.
  • Working as part of a team to collate examination answer booklets and other materials at the end of the exam in a timely and efficient way.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Previous experience of working in an educational setting.
  • The ability to work as part of a team.
  • The ability to work independently, but also the judgment to seek advice when necessary.
  • The ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • The ability to deal with challenging situations in a sensitive yet firm manner.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent reliability.

This is a paid role. The rates of pay for the 2011-2012 academic year are still to be confirmed, but pay will be dependent on the duration of the examinations that you invigilate.

It is mandatory for all supporting invigilators to attend training sessions prior to the University's main summer examination periods.
