The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is the largest development institution focused on the private sector. The private sector is a critical part of the development process, providing the growth, jobs and key services that help people improve their lives and move out of poverty. IFC helps the private sector in difficult environments by providing scarce capital, advice, comfort, and strong business standards that allow private companies to grow and promote inclusive and sustainable development. IFC is seeking to recruit a Strategy Officer for the Corporate Strategy Department. The Corporate Strategy Department (CCS) is responsible for developing corporate strategies, advising departments on the development of their own strategies, and providing analytical and strategic support to IFC Senior Management. This includes the management of the corporate and department strategy discussions, development of the annual corporate strategy board paper (IFC Road Map), special strategy studies, reporting on quarterly strategy progress and the corporate scorecard, coordination of country strategies, management of the strategist network across IFC, coordination of strategic interactions with the World Bank and the Independent Evaluation Group, conducting the annual client survey, and facilitating interactions with other international development institutions. The Strategy Officer position is a key part of the small strategy team that undertakes the above activities. The Strategy Officer will work across CCS to provide strong analysis, report writing and presentations, reflecting an understanding of global trends, development economics, IFC vision and strategies, and the role of the private sector in enhancing development. The strategy officer will also help coordinate strategic activities throughout IFC.

Duties and Accountabilities:
Duties can be quite varied over time, but could include:

• Providing lead analysis, report writing, and presentations for strategic studies assigned to the Corporate Strategy Department, such as the Middle Income Strategy and the Global Client Strategy

• Providing analysis of the impact of global economic trends on IFC corporate and regional strategies, drawing from available internal and external sources

• Providing strategic views on key issues for the Corporation, reflecting latest understanding of global economic trends and development thinking

• Supporting the writing of sections of the annual IFC Road Map, and assisting with the IFC Business Plan and Budget process

• Supporting the Management Team Retreat and Quarterly Directors’ Meetings

• Reviewing regional, sector, and country strategies to ensure they reflect corporate priorities, adequately coordinate activities occurring throughout the Corporation, and reflect best practice

• Supporting regions in developing selected strategies, including country assistance strategies

• Supporting the Corporate Scorecard, including developing appropriate metrics and liasing with the Development Impact Department on the IDGs.

• Periodically preparing strategic briefs for senior management

• Supporting the knowledge sharing activities and events of the Strategists and Economists Network, including the iCollaborate website

• Supporting as needed other CCS activities such as quarterly reporting, interaction with the World Bank and IEG, analysis of other IFIs, and analytic support to special requests

Selection Criteria:
• Minimum of Master’s Degree in related area (e.g. international affairs, economics, finance, MBA, etc) and four years of related work experience

• Strong analytic abilities, including data analysis and presentation

• Strong writing skills (English)

• Ability to draw on internal and external sources to present key global trends that affect strategy

• Understanding of development economics and the role of the private sector in development

• Familiarity with private sector investments and advisory services

• Familiarity with IFC strategies, operations, and strategy processes, including measurement of development impact and additionality, and understanding of the framework for resource management and profitability a plus

• Familiarity with key IFC databases used in strategy work (e.g. iDesk, MIS) a plus

• Understanding and familiarity with the World Bank a plus

• Demonstrated ability to deliver at a consistently high level under tight deadlines while managing multiple projects

• Demonstrated ability to combine attention to detail with broad- based analysis
