Senior Clinical Research Scientist, Vaccine Development

As part of the Clinical and Regulatory Affairs Office, the Senior Medical Officer / Senior Clinical Scientist will be responsible for a range of vaccine development and evaluation projects in the PATH Vaccine Development and PATH Vaccine Access and Delivery Programs, including leadership roles in oversight of established projects, identification of new opportunities to optimize vaccine use in developing countries and support of clinical trials of childhood vaccine candidates.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the Director for the Rotavirus Vaccine Impact (RVI) Project, which conducts clinical trials to optimize the effectiveness of rotavirus vaccines and monitors the impact of its introduction in developing countries. Responsible for technical oversight, strategic direction and management, project implementation, management of staff, administrative and financial management, communication with donors, and project evaluation.
  • Serve as the Technical Director for PATH’s contribution to the Accelerated Vaccine Introduction Initiative (AVI) and the Rotavirus Vaccine Program (RVP). The goals of these projects are to generate and communicate the evidence base to help drive policy making for the use of rotavirus vaccines in developing countries. Responsible for technical oversight, strategic direction and management, project implementation, management of staff, administrative and financial management, communication with donors, and project evaluation.
  • Support clinical evaluation of novel childhood vaccine candidates of importance in developing countries (e.g., preparatory epidemiological studies, development of protocols and oversight of clinical trials).
  • Regularly monitors developments in the field of vaccine introduction, with particular emphasis on assessing new challenges, and emerging opportunities, promising new strategies to accomplish the mission of PATH vaccine programs and generate proposals to seek funding for their implementation.
  • For vaccines of interest to PATH, provide input and maintain cognizance of far-reaching or controversial decisions concerning appropriate study design, objectives, endpoints, patient populations, and efficacy, safety and toxicity indicators.
  • Ensure that all vaccine development studies are in compliance with the highest standards of research ethics and medical science.
  • Presents and disseminates information about advances and promising new approaches and developments in PATH’s assigned program area, at relevant scientific meetings and major national and international meetings. Publishes articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals or other publications.
  • Works with Advocacy and Communication staff to ensure the technical accuracy of materials in support of communication objectives. Alerts staff to new developments in assigned technical fields, including disease burden, vaccine development and vaccine implementation.
  • Facilitate communication and collaborative efforts with all PATH vaccine program staff, partners, collaborators and funders, including industry, academia, government agencies, multilateral health organizations and non-governmental organizations.
Required Skills
  • Demonstrated leadership and project/program management skills, including ability to manage complex projects within budget and timeline constraints.
  • Articulate communicator, excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; proficiency in at least one other language preferred.
  • Open, engaging, and transparent work style. Global perspective and mindset; ability to work effectively with colleagues from myriad of cultures, backgrounds and geographies.
Required Experience

An advanced degree (MD/MPH, PhD) in relevant discipline plus a minimum of ten years of public health experience working on clinical trial design and implementation. Experience working on clinical trial design and implementation in developing countries would be a plus but is not required. Additional experience to include extensive knowledge of diarrheal diseases, especially rotavirus, and current research and development efforts in this arena plus extensive knowledge of childhood vaccines, including vaccine development and testing, licensure and introduction in public health programs in developing countries. Track record of success in generating funds from public or private sector donors.
