Programme Epidemiologist Sightsavers

Location: Sightsavers offices overseas or UK (dependent on the country location of the successful candidate) Salary: Dependent on location

This crucial position provides technical and scientific input to our research programmes, primarily trachoma initiatives in Africa and Asia. With considerable variety and visibility the Epidemiologist advises country teams on survey design, monitors and evaluates activity, and conducts operational investigations whilst reacting rapidly to data from the field.

At the same time, the postholder will actively develop and field test an integrated mapping tool and collaborate with the World Health Organisation and other trachoma partners in creating post-intervention surveillance systems. Naturally, time will be spent preparing written and oral reports, posters and presentations, including scientific papers for peer-reviewed journals and technical meetings. This will demand impressive written and spoken communications skills backed by the confidence to write for expert audiences and speak at a range of conferences.

Qualified to Master’s degree level, or equivalent, in epidemiology, medical statistics or public health, you will bring sound practical experience of epidemiological and health system research. In particular, you will be fully aware of research governance, quantitative and qualitative methods and statistical packages such as STATA and SPSS. As well as fluency in English, additional language skills in French or Portuguese are desirable. Hands-on exposure in Africa or Asia would also be a significant advantage.
