The International Hydropower Association is looking to recruit a Programme Director to cover its Hydropower Development work area. This forms one of three divisions of this leading international not-for-profit organization. Based at the Association’s head office in southwest London, UK, the Programme Director will drive IHA’s work in supporting the hydropower sector’s evolving role in sustainable development, with a focus on:

  • monitoring and reporting on global hydropower activities and new developments;
  • reviewing and commenting on relevant international energy, water and climate policy;
  • assessing the impacts of various investment and funding sources, financing models, markets and incentive schemes; and
  • steering initiatives to improve understanding of sector challenges and opportunities.

Managing a small team, and involving regular travel, the Programme Director will work closely with the two other divisional directors (Hydropower Sustainability Assessment and Business Administration). Reporting to the Executive Director, this group forms the senior management of the Association, which is guided by an international Board and a membership of public/private hydropower organizations active in some 100 countries. The Association also conducts its work through its offices in China and South America. In addition, IHA collaborates closely with other renewable energy organizations; institutions covering water, energy and climate; UN bodies; development agencies; commercial and development banks; and, environmental and social NGOs.

Candidates for the position will have:

  • strong understanding of hydropower and the electricity sector;
  • understanding of international energy, water and climate policy;
  • awareness of financing and market mechanisms;
  • at least five years’ international experience in management and stakeholder relationships; and
  • excellent research, communication and interpersonal skills
