Professor in Digital Technology

Make an impact and lead on the development of research in technologies to support the future digital economy. An academic with international standing is sought to take the lead for the Digital Economy strand of the International Doctoral Innovation Centre, a major partnership between the University of Nottingham (China and UK), Ningbo Science & Technology Bureau and Ningbo Education Bureau to educate and develop 100 leading talents in both energy and digital technologies through a pioneering cross-campus international doctoral training centre. They will also participate in the Horizon Centre for Digital Economy Research, a major research centre at Nottingham that is exploring innovative new digital services and platforms. The appointment will be based in the Division of Computer Science at Ningbo Campus, part of the University’s established School of Computer Science which boasts 100% of its research on international quality (RAE 2008), feeding into undergraduate and postgraduate education. Computer Science is one of the most popular degrees in China and, particularly in Ningbo thanks to its long-pursuit for industry upgrading and the recent multi-billion pounds “Intelligent City” grand project. The Division of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus (UNNC) currently offers both undergraduate programs (with 2+2 options) and PhD programs. From September 2012, the Division will be introducing two full UG programs ("4+0" option) which will make its size more than tripled in the next few years.

Ningbo is located only 2½ hours from Shanghai by car. It is a relatively high-income city for China, with a per capita income (PPP basis) of about US $12,000. Ningbo has one of China’s largest deep-water ports, a modern airport with excellent connections to cities such as Beijing, Hong Kong, Seoul and Taipei and high-speed rail connections to other major cities in China. It has international schools, excellent shopping facilities and an attractive multicultural nightlife. It also has many rivers, lakes and mountains in the outskirts and is considered to be one of the cities in China which has the best quality of life.

Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant discipline such as Computer Science or Information Technology. Excellent English communication skills are essential together with strong teaching abilities. Candidates are also expected to have demonstrated an ability to conduct high-quality research and attract research funding.

The post offers European-level salaries and excellent benefits with reasonable teaching loads. A competitive research support package is offered for successful candidates. An attractive international benefits package including accommodation allowance, travel allowance, support for international schooling (there are three international schools in Ningbo), and insurance (including international medical insurance) will be provided for international appointments.

This post is available from 1 August 2012 (or earlier subject to mutual agreement) and will initially be offered on a fixed-term contract with the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China for a period of up to seven years. This contract may be extended on an indefinite basis by mutual agreement, subject to revised terms and conditions.
