In the United States, it seeks to ensure that all people-especially those with the fewest resources-have access to the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life. Based in Seattle, the foundation is led by CEO Jeff Raikes and co-chair William H. Gates Sr., under the direction of Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett.

Group Summary
The mission of the Gates Foundation's Global Health Program (GHP) is to help ensure that lifesaving advances in health are created and shared with those who need them most. To date, we have committed nearly $10 billion in global health grants to organizations worldwide. The focus of our grants is to:
- Discover new insights to fight serious diseases and other health problems affecting developing countries.

- Develop effective and affordable vaccines, medicines, and other health tools.

- Deliver proven health solutions in developing countries.

- Advocate for more and better resources and policies to support the introduction and uptake of new and existing health technologies.

Responsibilities

HIV/AIDS is one of the Gates Foundation's top global health priorities. We focus on reducing the burden of HIV in developing countries, where the epidemic represents one of the most serious health and development challenges. To date, the foundation has committed more than US$2.2 billion in HIV grants to organizations around the world, and $650 million to support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. Our HIV strategy focuses on three key priorities:

- Discovering and developing new tools: We support efforts to discover and develop powerful new tools for preventing and controlling HIV – including HIV vaccines, antiretroviral-based prevention, and new HIV diagnostics for developing countries.

- Maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of HIV programs: We fund efforts to help donors and countries use HIV funding as efficiently and effectively as possible, so the greatest number of people benefit.

- Country demonstration projects: We invest in country-specific projects to demonstrate and share lessons learned from scaling up HIV prevention and treatment. These currently include ACHAP in Botswana, Avahan in India, and a China initiative.

The foundation's HIV vaccine investments are the highest priority within the foundation's work on HIV and center on:

- Efficiently advancing the most promising HIV vaccine candidates to human efficacy trials.

- Supporting the development of novel HIV vaccine concepts with the goal of advancing the best candidates to early clinical trials.

- Facilitating collaboration and coordination to accelerate HIV vaccine R&D.

The HIV Vaccine strategy is implemented through five sub-initiatives with the following objectives:

- Early Discovery, to prime the concept pipeline with small investments in high risk/high reward early discovery projects.

- Product Concept Pipeline, supporting a focused pipeline of novel product concepts that are outside of the current paradigms and/or not sufficiently funded by others.

- Clinical Development, to efficiently advance the most promising HIV vaccine candidates to clinical development and human efficacy trials.

- Central Service Facilities, to support the research efforts with standardized and comparative evaluation of antibody and cell-mediated immune responses, data analysis and statistical support, and high-quality storage and distribution of samples.

- Policy, Advocacy, Regulatory & Global Coordination, to support all elements of the HIV vaccine strategy, facilitating collaboration and coordination among key global players, and bringing efficiencies to the discovery, development, and clinical evaluation of HIV vaccines.

The HIV vaccine initiative is led by the Deputy Director who will work with a team to continually refine an integrated strategy for how the foundation will engage and invest in the HIV vaccine field. He/she will manage a small team of Program Officers who work together to develop and actively manage grants that execute against the approved strategy. As a core member of the HIV SPT management team he/she is expected to play a major role in external partner/stakeholder management as well as overall HIV strategy and portfolio management.
