Community Senior Team Leader, APHIAplus project

USAID awarded a comprehensive health service delivery project to PATH to improve the health of Kenyans in the western region of the country. The project, APHIAplus, builds upon USAID/Kenya’s country-wide health service support project known as the AIDS, Population and Health Integrated Assistance II (APHIA II). PATH and its partners will implement the APHIAplus project in Western and Nyanza Provinces from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015. It will work closely with the Government of Kenya and a wide variety of non-government agencies to strengthen health care services throughout the two provinces. In addition to addressing specific diseases, the APHIAplus project will work on strengthening the region’s health care system by rehabilitating health facilities, training staff, and supporting supply and communication networks. The award, valued at US$143 million, is one of several region-specific health projects that USAID/Kenya plans to award in the near future.

PATH seeks to recruit a Community Senior Team Leader will provide strategic direction and leadership for community initiatives aimed at promoting healthier behaviors and creating demand for an integrated package of health services. As a member of the senior technical team, the Community Senior Team Leader will ensure strong coordination with other project initiatives at all levels, keeping a strong focus on strengthening community units and community facility linkages.

The main responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Supervise activities conducted by staff and a range of implementing partners (NGOs, CBOs etc).
  • Provide technical direction on project design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Guide health promotion and behavior change initiatives for MARPS and general populations in predominantly underserved, rural populations.
  • In partnership with the project team, oversee the development of an overall project communication strategy, develop relevant communication materials and job aides.
  • Ensure that the cross-cutting issues of gender and youth are addressed throughout project activities.
Required Skills
  • Ability to translate complex concepts for lay audiences.
  • Knowledge of global HIV/AIDS and/or gender sexual and reproductive health issues; familiarity with the political environment of these fields and/or global health a strong plus.
  • Good networking skills.
Required Experience
  • Masters degree or equivalent in public health, community development or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of ten years' direct experience in the areas of public health, community development, health communication or a related area that demonstrates ability to train and facilitate groups, especially as it relates to health communication and community mobilization.
  • Direct experience working with community health volunteers and supporting the roll-out of the MOH’s community strategy.
  • Experience managing or working in coalitions or complex teams.
  • Experience working diverse stakeholders at the community level.
