Coalition Coordinator

The Cotton Campaign to end forced child labor in the Uzbekistan cotton industry is a broad coalition of human rights NGOs, trade unions, socially responsible investors, industry association, and retailers. The Coalition Coordinator will be responsible for building consensus among coalition participants, working with the steering committee to develop a strategic plan and expanding the coalition. This position will require experience in convening and building consensus among diverse organizations in international human rights advocacy strategies. The ideal candidate will also have experience in leading policy advocacy campaigns and facilitating multi-stakeholder dialogue. Applicants must be excellent communicators, have strong writing skills, and knowledge about international human rights issues, particularly child and forced labor. An ideal candidate is one who has been involved in social/economic justice campaigning and is an independent, innovative and driven individual with excellent interpersonal skills.

Job responsibilities include:

Build Consensus and Strategic Vision

1. Work with the Steering Group to set strategic direction for the Uzbekistan cotton initiative as a whole and serve as a point of contact for keeping all civil society and business stakeholders engaged in the campaign.
2. Implement the overall strategic vision of the international campaign and identify key targets for this initiative.
3. Facilitate the Steering Group’s identification of leverage points, such as the ILO, World Bank, International Cotton Advisory Committee, individual governments, and any other targets or leverage points the Steering Group may identify.
4. Coordinate with the editor of Cottoncampaign.org, the Coalition’s website and develop a campaign branding strategy and serve as the public face of the initiative where appropriate

Coordinate Communications

5. Ensure the effective flow of information among coalition participants and coalition working groups.
6. Facilitate regular steering committee meetings, circulating notes, updating work plans and support ongoing communications between meetings.
7. Participate in working group meetings. Provide support to working group chairs and maintain an efficient complementarity and division of labor among the working groups.
8. Provide coordination between geographical coalitions, particularly those in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Facilitate and support efforts to the coalition expanding into new geographical areas.
9. Produce specific work products such as meeting reports and media statements, as needed and work with cottoncampaign.org site manager to ensure dissemination and accessibility of campaign information, especially with traditional and social media outreach.
10. Coordinate drafting, revising and collecting signatures for joint letters to send to various governments or international institutions on behalf of the coalition.

Fundraise and Grow the Coalition

11. Work with the Steering Group, and particularly with the European campaign coordinator, to identify new allies and strategies for recruiting new Cotton Campaign participants and deepening the participation of all.
12. Fundraise for the campaign secretariat and support/coordinate fundraising among the principal coalition partners.
13. Manage and expand funder relations, writing grant applications and grant reports.


Qualifications


Qualifications:

- 5+ years’ experience in policy advocacy and/or social justice campaigns (especially corporate campaigns);
- Experience working on labor and human rights issues, international focus preferred;
- Knowledge and experience with international organizations and related mechanisms (OECD, ILO, World Bank) and global apparel supply chains
- Experience in coalition building and the facilitation of dialogue;
- Skilled in coordination, mediation and strategic planning;
- Excellent communications, writing and editing skills;
- Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, manage work streams, multi-task and work creatively;
- Well organized and detail oriented;
- Fluency in English (written & oral); knowledge of Russian or Uzbek also helpful;
- Bachelor’s degree required.
