Position Reports to:
  • General Manager Transport Australia (in association with the General Manager Transport International)
Primary Purpose of Position:

The role of the Chief Technical Principal Structures is to provide technical leadership in their area of expertise across all of SMEC’s profit centres by:

  • Provide high level input to projects – at development or detail design stage
  • Undertake technical audits to manage and control technical risks on projects
  • Participate in strategic and business planning/development
  • Participate in engaging key technical resources
  • Assist in developing a knowledge management centre
  • Participation in subsidiary development activities
  • Mentoring future Technical Principals
  • Raising profile of the group by publishing/presenting papers and chairing industry groups
Key Responsibilities:

As directed by the General Manager Transport Australia (and requested by the General Manager Transport International)

  • Provide high level technical advice to clients and to project members/project manager in Transport area
  • Help to develop corporate strategy and divisional strategic business plans for the Transport market sector
  • Input in the development of SMEC’s technical capabilities in the Transport sector.
  • Identification and management of technical risks of all Transport projects
  • In collaboration with the General Manager Transport Australia and Regional Transport Managers, market SMEC’s expertise and capability to existing clients and prospective clients. Share the marketing intelligence gained across other functions as appropriate
  • Assist functional group to diversify into new markets within Transport area
  • Presentation of papers at appropriate forums to raise SMEC’s profile
  • Liaise with other Managers to ensure appropriate skills are incorporated into multi-discipline teams created to service SMEC’s clients
  • Prepare and maintain quality control of marketing materials for the technical market
  • Participate in proposal preparation, including review of the final proposal documents, to ensure SMEC’s proposal is technically sound
  • Co-ordinate with Technical Principals to set and maintain minimum acceptable technical standards for all SMEC Transport projects
  • Assist with technical audits of the technical delivery of Transport projects
  • Identify high level resource requirements and assist with the recruitment of such staff, such as Technical Principals and team leaders
  • Mentor senior level staff within Transport
  • Assist in succession plans for senior level Transport staff
  • Ensure technical information and technology transfer occurs for the technical discipline across the company.
  • Assist and review award submissions
  • Understand commercial and technical aspects related to clients’ TOR on projects

Work Priority
In carrying out the role of Chief Technical Principal Transport for the Division the following split of time should be considered in determining the work required for the role:

Key Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
  • Appropriate Structural Design degree/higher degree from accredited university/college
  • Minimum 20 years of practical experience in Structural Design
  • Well known to the Structural Design industry
  • Sound understanding of Structural Design and a demonstrated ability to successfully deliver to client’s satisfaction
  • Demonstrated technical and commercial leadership within the Structural Design
  • Business planning, budgeting and commercial acumen
  • An understanding of business, organisation and marketing
  • High level of consulting and client management skills
  • Industry awareness
  • Customer service orientation
  • Knowledge of obligations under the SMEC BMS
  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of appropriate software applications and design tools
