Category Manager - Logistics and Warehousing

Context Logistics is a newly established category in procurement. This role has specific responsibility for developing the category management strategy for logistics across Europe with 3rd party providers of transport and warehousing services.


The role has responsibility for ensuring the provision of market knowledge and key data in providing forensic insight to support all strategy propositions.

It will have accountability for seeking new ways of working with logistics providers across Europe.

It is key in influencing the sourcing decisions with stakeholders across all European operations.

The role has responsibility for the logistics category procurement deliverables across Europe covering multiple business units.



Dimensions of the role

a) Financial
Total Europe category spend for logistics is +/- £100 million pa
Individual category spend ranges from £10 million pa to £25 million pa.
b) Market Complexity
This role will operate across multiple business units. Aspects of complexity include:
Three key supply centres in Europe and the IMC’s.
11 suppliers currently providing transport and warehousing services in this regional category.
Requires an understanding of and ability to operate with multiple cultures and market dynamics.
c) Leadership Responsibilities

  • Leadership responsibility for developing category excellence management approach.

  • Increase Diageo’s expertise in the category and also in the overall category management process on a global basis.

  • Effectively manage total category programme through great execution of the individual projects within the category.

  • Ensure risk to Diageo is minimised through – contractual coverage, contingency planning and corporate citizenship compliance.

  • Ensure compliance with all legal regulations.

Lead the category across geographical and business cultural boundaries to:


  • Provide in depth market analysis and understanding.

  • Create & develop strategic options on a European basis.

  • Finalise & agree category strategy.

  • Source from the marketplace.

  • Recommend final source/s & help manage implementation.

  • Manage strategic elements of supplier relationships.

  • Manage quality requirements to meet stakeholder requirements.

Top 3-5 accountabilities


  • Develop strategic category management approach to the logistics spend in Europe at optimum cost to support the strategies of the IMC’s and Supply Centres delivering sustainable competitive advantage to Diageo.

  • Development of annual AOP and subsequent delivery of targets & objectives.

  • Build a detailed understanding of the existing supply base and wider European supply market. Analyse market trends, gain insight on what our competition are doing, understanding the effect of change in the market dynamics e.g. supplier consolidation. Understand supplier capabilities and key cost drivers to be able to quickly identify opportunities.



Qualifications and experience required


  • University Degree in quantitative or commercially biased discipline.

  • Purchasing qualification desirable (CIPS/MBA).

  • Must have 7 – 10 years experience which should include the following:

  • Significant procurement responsibilities in a blue chip organisation.

  • Experience of logistics operations and working with 3rd party providers of logistics services, and an understanding of how logistics solutions are designed and developed.

  • Experience in working with other key stakeholder functions e.g. finance, manufacturing, supply chain, marketing etc.

  • Demonstrable leadership experience, e.g. leading projects; programmes; business units or line management.
