I. TechnoServe Background:


TechnoServe is an international, non-profit economic development organization founded in 1968 out of a conviction that a vibrant private sector is an essential foundation for economic growth and poverty reduction. TechnoServe undertakes targeted, catalytic technical assistance and other programming to increase the competitiveness of entrepreneurs, businesses and industries that in-turn provide sustainable employment, inclusion of the poor and increased incomes. TechnoServe operates in 25 developing countries with over 1000 employees. A substantial portion of our work is in agriculture, enhancing farm productivity and commodity quality and addressing gaps in processing and other agribusiness capacities. Our programs increase smallholder access to new technologies, aggregation and storage mechanisms, markets, critical information and finance. TechnoServe also undertakes structured programs to identify and support high potential entrepreneurs in various sectors through leadership mentoring networks, formalization support, access to capital and development of sustainable business services such as accounting, finance, marketing and human resource management.



II. Position Description:


TechnoServe is beginning a new technical unit focused on improving our effectiveness at
building knowledge and skills among our beneficiaries to ensure that they can carry on and
improve the work started through our interventions.

We depend on our staff of business advisors to transfer these skills and knowledge to our
clients and thus, the ability of our staff to build capacity is a critical success factor in our
work. The capacity building manager will be primarily responsible for implementing and
overseeing activities related to capacity building of TechnoServe field staff.

Responsibilities include: development, coordination and facilitation of training programs and tools to educate and enhance staff performance and specifically, staff ability to achieve impact with clients.



III. Duties and Responsibilities:


Training Needs Assessment and Curricula Development:

• Provide input into training design (in year one this will include assisting with the design of an induction program to introduce new staff to TechnoServe’s mission vision and values).
• Conduct needs assessments, as required, to identify staff skills and knowledge necessary to achieve impact with client and gaps that can be targeted through training interventions
• Build and maintain, with the guidance of the Capacity Building Senior Manager, a list of core competencies necessary for field staff success
• Develop training programs as required, including designing and developing learning activities, audio-visual materials, instructor guides, lesson plans, and participant guides.


Facilitation and Training of Trainers:

• Facilitate TechnoServe staff training programs in all regions. (In the first year this will encompass further roll-out of a training program targeted to develop staff ability to effectively and collaboratively consult with clients and training in business financial literacy in addition to delivery of TechnoServe induction training once it is developed.)
• Train regionally based trainers to facilitate staff training programs
• Provide coaching and feedback to trainers, including conducting observation visits and refresher trainings
• Plan and arrange necessary logistics for training workshops, as required


Knowledge Management and Coordination:

• Develop and maintain online platform for access to training materials, tools and refresher trainings
• Engage managers to ensure partnership in staff skills application and capacity building
• Develop tools to evaluate impact and results of training programs
• Review evaluations and results of training courses, objectives, and accomplishments and makes program adjustments where warranted
• Manages training consultants as required



IV. Required Skills & Experience:


• Bachelor’s degree in business, education, human resources, international relations or organizational development required
• Advanced degree in business, international relations, human resources, organizational development, or education preferred
• Experience working in or supporting field operations within the economic development arena
• Outstanding verbal, written, multi-tasking and presentation skills
• Ability to create momentum and foster organizational change
• Proven experience designing and delivering training programs in a multi-cultural environment
• Familiarity with adult learning methodologies, with a certificate in AL preferred
• Excellent word processing and spreadsheet skills
• Experience with design software, such as MS Publisher, preferred
• Proven organizational skills, self-starter, team player
• Ability to travel internationally as much as 50% of the time
• Fluency in Spanish mandatory
• Fluency in French, or Portuguese preferred
