General Information

As the principal intergovernmental organisation of the Commonwealth, the Commonwealth Secretariat implements the collective decisions of its 54 member governments. The Communications and Public Affairs Division (CPAD) is responsible for projecting the image of the Commonwealth and the Commonwealth Secretariat, its values and activities to member governments, the media, specialist groups, young people, and to the general public. It does this through press and media relations, publications, website management, outreach activities and audio/video productions. CPAD also undertakes content creation and management for the Commonwealth Secretariat’s internal communications platform/intranet, ComShare.

The audiovisual production team manages and undertakes audio/video production and distribution for CPAD and on behalf of other divisions. It provides advice, covers Commonwealth Secretariat-related activities and liaises with external companies to create audio and video content for Commonwealth Secretariat audiences including for ComShare, the website and the media.

Job summary

The Post Holder will be responsible for providing audio and video services which will include operating remote cameras in a studio, lighting, vision mixing and sound recording.

He or she will also do lighting, sound and camera operations on Electronic News Gathering (ENG) productions.

The Post Holder will be required to edit a range of videos for internet and broadcast distribution and will also do basic audio editing for internet and broadcast distribution.

He or she will have overall responsibility for the technical quality of Commonwealth Secretariat productions, the smooth running of the studio and will provide technical advice in relation to audio/video production and distribution.

Tasks description

The post-holder will:

  • Work either with a Producer/Communications Assistant or independently to record audio/video content of Commonwealth-related events and activities on ENG assignments or in a remote controlled multi-camera studio
  • Prepare the studio and kit for productions by undertaking lighting, chroma key and auto-cue system set up and other related activities
  • Edit audio and video for a range of productions including news packages, features, messages, talking heads, interviews, multi-camera studio programmes, and promos using Avid Media Composer
  • Prepare audio/video material and distribute via the Commonwealth Secretariat website, intranet and to other platforms in the formats required
  • Keep audio/visual kit in good order, ensure supplies are procured in a timely manner, keep up-to-date records, ensure studio and editing facilities are clean and organised, materials are labelled and filed, and ensure the smooth operations of the studio
  • Ensure appropriate quality control systems are in place and followed to ensure accuracy and high production standards
  • Contribute to the ongoing and long term audio/video planning and activities
  • Other duties as required

Person Specification

The Post Holder will generally be a multi-talented person who has proven camera and studio operation skills, solid Avid editing skills, basic audio recording skills and will be experienced in preparing video/audio content for distribution on the web.

He/she will be proactive, creative, organised, and full of ideas and passion for the role. He/ she will enjoy working in a diverse role which requires both working alone and with others and have the ability to work well under pressure. He or she should also have a good news sense, the ability to think on his/her feet.

Education

  • A diploma/degree from a recognised institution in a relevant discipline such as Broadcast Operations, Film/Video/TV, Media Production, Broadcast Journalism

Experience

  • Two - five years relevant work experience in a broadcast/ video production facility, as a freelancer or in an online environment
  • Editing on Avid Media Composer
  • Vision mixing remote cameras
  • ENG shooting
  • Basic lighting
  • Basic audio production
  • Creating audio/video content for the web

Desirable:

  • Experience in web video distribution
  • Experience editing on Final Cut Pro
  • A flair for using computer graphics to produce audiovisuals
