Assistant Scientist - Chemistry

Conduct research on chemical and structural basis of rice quality in terms of starch structure and rheology, analyse and interpret the data and prepare manuscripts and reports. Supervise the users of the laboratory and train and supervise staff in the safe and correct use of equipment. Coordinate the Risk Management and Quality Assurance issues and the Standard Operating Procedures of the GQNC.

Major accountabilities/Responsibilities
• Design experiments and carry out research on analyzing starch structure, and the rheological interactions between grain constituents, and relate this to sensory quality
• Analyze and interpret data from research, and write reports and manuscripts for publication in journals
• Supervise, train staff and clients who need to perform specialized chemical laboratory procedures and techniques
• Supervise technicians and contract workers
• Be accountable for advanced technical equipment, in particular the Size exclusion Chromatography unit, train people in its use, carry out maintenance and trouble-shooting

Qualification requirements
• MSc in Chemistry or units towards MSc in Chemistry
• At least 5 years of experience in Cereal Chemistry
• Ability to design experiments dealing with the chemistry of the rice grain, ability to use and maintain laboratory equipment used for starch, analysis, laboratory management skills, advanced computer skills, excellent organizational skills, excellent time-management skills, excellent communication skills, ability and desire to learn new skills
